New updates!

Meeting time

From now on, for consistency, we're doing the first and third Tuesday of every month at 5:30PM, VCD space in Collegiate Square. Our next meeting will be on October 7.

What you should to until then
We've got a few projects going on!
  1. AIGA REPRESENT - Bring in a design that represents you as a designer. It should have your name and face on it somewhere on 6"x6" dimensions.
  2. Inspiration - Designers love cool shit. We love cool shit. Bring some in.
  3. Put the VT in VOTE - Get the youth vote out with a cool poster design! Read the details here.
Elsewhere on campus ...
Got an event or a design opportunity you want posted here? Comment and lemme know.

Make an impression

In this business, it's imperative that people remember your name. Anyone who is applying for a job, looking for freelance work, etc. is competing with lots of other designers. LOTS. It pays to practice your interview skills and get comfortable talking with people but you need to stand out from the crowd.

I found this fun little "ice-breaker" and thought I'd share it with everyone. It's a little cheezy, but if done right, can look pretty slick. I'll bet not many graphic designers resort to magic when talking to potential employers or clients, so it just *might* give you the edge over the other guy who DIDN'T do something interesting in his interview.

Welcome back!

Hello to all the new and returning members of Virginia Tech's chapter of AIGA! Here's what was covered at the first meeting of the year:

Why should I get an official membership with the AIGA?
  • You get webspace to post your portfolio on the AIGA network.
  • There are a lot of great job and internship listings.
  • You can enter AIGA's competitions.
  • You get discounts for AIGA events. (Even better discounts if you're a student!)
  • Virginia Tech's chapter isn't an official chapter of the AIGA, at least not until we get 10+ paid members. Help us get legit.
  • An AIGA membership shows other designers and possible employers that you're committed to your art; it shows everyone that you're serious business. Really, though, having a membership is a Big Deal.
This year's goals for AIGA VT
  • Members should get to know each other as friends. A big part of AIGA VT is forming a strong network of designers across all years. Other than getting to know some awesome people, you make connections that'll probably help you in the long run: in the design industry, it's all about who you know.
  • Meetings this year will be every other Tuesday at 5:30 PM in the VCD space in Collegiate Square. On our off weeks, we want to take the opportunity to hang out at AIGA social events. We talked about getting together next Thursday (Sept. 11) at PK's. More details later!
  • Learn from each other. Bring in your stuff for extra critique, show everyone something you learned on the nice TV, get to know about your future classes, etc.
  • We really want to earn money to send a couple kids to the HOW conference in Austin, Texas.
  • Work on projects outside of class. A portfolio with only school projects isn't going to get you far.
  • Someone, design us a logo already!
2-Minute Film Festival

Also, Ben Hannam needs help with this year's 24 hour film festival! Ideas for this year include competing on an international level with participants in Istanbul, doubling the prizes, participants, and audience while halving the films' lengths! He needs help with fundraising, a website, concessions, and the event itself. This event accomplished a lot for the arts community in Blacksburg last year, and it's definitely worth another go.
